The Ayers Foundation Trust proudly presented the inaugural Jim Ayers Torchbearer Award Winner to distinguished Ayers Scholar alumnus Trevor Teague of Darden, Tennessee, at a ceremony honoring the legacy of the Trust’s founder, the late Jim Ayers. The Torchbearer Award recognizes an Ayers Scholar alumnus whose dedication and service exemplify the Trust’s mission of transforming rural communities one student at a time.

“Jim and I both grew up in rural communities, and we were both blessed to have parents who understood the life-changing benefits of a quality education,” said Janet Ayers, Ayers Foundation Trust Chairman of the Board. “As Jim achieved personal and professional success, he was determined to create opportunities for others. The Torchbearer Award continues his legacy by celebrating those who give back to their rural Tennessee communities.”

Trevor Teague graduated at the top of his class from Riverside High School and earned a degree in engineering from the University of Tennessee at Martin. After graduation, he returned to Decatur County, where he restored a home on his family farm and planted deep roots in the community that raised him.

“Trevor and Karlee are building a life centered around family, service, and community involvement, values that reflect the spirit of the Ayers Foundation Trust and our Come Home Tennessee initiative,” said Burton Ayers, Ayers Foundation Trust Chief Executive Officer. “Not only is Trevor already demonstrating great success as a professional engineer, but he is a testament to how we hope our alumni will contribute to their communities.”

In recognition of his service and community impact, Teague also received a $5,000 grant to help stock community college food pantries for students in need.

The Jim Ayers Torchbearer Award will be presented annually to an alumnus who demonstrates outstanding professional achievement, community engagement, and a commitment to improving the quality of life in rural Tennessee.
